Linux for Windows is based on one of those ideas that's either brilliant or moronic, depending on your point of view. Aiming to simplify the installation and use of the increasingly popular open-source operating system, Macmillan devised a version of Linux-Mandrake that operates as a Windows shell.

This concept makes installation much less dangerous: instead of repartitioning your hard drive, you create a giant (500 to 1500 MB) image file as a kind of fake partition, then run Linux as if it were a Windows program. In theory, this should make installation easier; unfortunately, the user has to learn just as much to get this version of Linux going as any other, and support is practically nonexistent in comparison with others like Red Hat. What do you do when installation stops dead in a fit of kernel panic? Good luck figuring it out, either from the skimpy docs or the Web.

This product may fill a niche for advanced users who either don't want to partition or need to train Windows users on Linux, but the rest of us should either stick with Windows or get one of the better-supported versions of Linux. --Rob Lightner

I have been using SuSE Linux since version 7.3. I have upgraded the 7.3 to 9.0 the last time, now 9.3 looked very promising. Installation is a breeze. Lots of software including development tools, games, and server functionality. I have been a happy SuSE user for over four years now. I hope they keep up their good work since they got acquired by Novell and won't make major upsetting changes for their licensing and usage. Corporate greed, you never know...

I am an avid Microsoft developer, administrator, and user (MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA), but if you want to get into Linux world, I assure you that you would not be disappointed if you get SuSE Linux 9.3. As they say, "Have a lot Fun!"

Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal breaks with earlier Red Hat (and all other) Linux releases with the unification of the Gnome and KDE desktops. In effect, Red Hat has made the two almost indistinguishable in a production environment.

This unification is achieved by creating a theme--an add-on look and feel--called Bluecurve, which uses identical icons and other eye candy for similar features in each, and creates similar Gnome and KDE menus. These menus now sport a limited range of well-chosen programs with simple descriptions of what the program does. This is a change from the earlier approach, where users were offered all the browsers (now you just get Mozilla), six text editors, and so on, all with nondescriptive names to confuse new users.

Much of this effort can be bypassed by most new users, as the default is now to install only Gnome 2, but then, Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal is really aimed at businesses looking for a low-cost, reliable production desktop to replace Windows.

Which brings us to OpenOffice.org, the public domain version of StarOffice 5.2, released by Sun and heavily reworked into a fairly decent replacement for Microsoft Office--though currently without an integrated database. OpenOffice.org ditches the old StarOffice desktop (as Sun has done with the commercial StarOffice 6.0), loses some copyrighted modules, and gains open-source replacements. It's on the menu under Office and you can run the components separately.

On the downside, multimedia support for home users is weak, with MP3 support missing (there's a link to the XMMS add-in for it, though), as is any way to burn a CD. Oddly, Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal doesn't include Real's RealOne Player either, which you'll have to download and install yourself if you want it. Again, this might be a deliberate pitch for business acceptance.

Hardware detection is better than ever and networking and Internet setup are as easy as filling in a few dialog boxes. Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal even installs security in the form of a network firewall for Net users. It also handles dual booting with Windows for those who just want to dabble.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 Personal comes on three installation CDs, with two source CDs, a documentation CD, and a multimedia and office applications CD. The paper documentation is limited to an installation guide.

Overall, and despite the caveats, this is the most innovative and easiest to understand Linux distribution to appear yet. You really can install it and be using it to write documents, listen to CDs, watch TV or video, and use the Net within minutes of finishing the installation. Impressive, and a great introduction to Linux for new users.

Nicely polished and with an improved file system, Red Hat Linux 7.2 is the best release to date of the most popular commercial Linux distribution. If you tried an earlier version of Red Hat Linux and found it too rough for you, particularly at installation time, you'll want to give it another try now. This particular version of Red Hat Linux 7.2 is the plain vanilla edition (as opposed to the more capable Professional edition and the various server products), and is best suited for use on a workstation or as a LAN server on a small network. On the other hand, since the kernel is the same as that of the more costly versions, you can install this product and add the capabilities you need by installing additional software downloaded from the Internet.

The most substantial innovation present in Red Hat Linux 7.2---which is based on the Linux 2.4.7 kernel--is a new file system called ext3. An improvement on the reliable ext2 file system that's long been standard in Linux, ext3 is a journaling file system. A journaling file system keeps notes on what it's doing with data in the file system--it logs all of its read and write operations. This decreases file system downtime because after a crash, error-checking utilities (like fsck, which must run after an unanticipated shutdown) need not inspect the entire file system--they can look just at those regions that were being manipulated at the time of the problem. This saves enormous amounts of time, particularly on large volumes of 50 GB or more.

By design, ext3 is backward and forward compatible. You can take an ext2 volume (a volume used to store accumulated data, say) that was created under an old version of Linux (Red Hat or otherwise), and mount it as an ext3 volume under Red Hat Linux 7.2 and enjoy the protection of journaling. Conversely, you can take a volume that was created as ext3 and remount it with no problems (though also with no journaling) as an ext2 volume. By switching to ext3, you gain a valuable new feature and give up none of the reliability of ext2. It alone is worth the upgrade if you run a large file system or if you require especially high availability and can't tolerate long fsck cycles.

Another substantial improvement reflected in this version: GRUB, an improved boot loader that replaces the old standard, LILO. (Both bits of software follow the Unix tradition of naming utilities with goofy acronyms: LILO is LInux LOader, while GRUB is GRand Unified Bootloader.) GRUB serves the same purpose as utilities like System Commander, which allow you to select at boot time from among several installed operating systems. Unlike LILO, GRUB allows you to choose to boot pretty much any installed operating system, including FreeBSD, OpenBSD, OS/2, and any version of Microsoft Windows. It's a handy utility to have on a workstation, though you can opt for LILO if you prefer.

Other improvements have more to do with increased hardware support--many more network interface cards and printers are recognized--and general refinements in the user interface (this release uses GNOME 1.4 and KDE 2.2.1). A handful of new utilities make life easier for users and administrators, chief among them the Nautilus file manager. Nautilus does a decent job of displaying local and remote files intuitively--it makes it easy to manage the contents of an FTP site, for one thing. Another graphical tool makes it easier to manage user privileges. As has always been the case with Red Hat Linux, version 7.2 ships with a load of goodies that includes the Mozilla 0.9.2 browser, the Apache 1.3.20 Web server, and the StarOffice 5.2 office productivity suite. Anything else you want, you can easily download and install. Software installation is particularly easy thanks to the long-popular Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) file format for distributables, which this operating system naturally supports.

True enough, you can download Red Hat Linux 7.2 in its entirety from Red Hat's corporate site, and if you have a high-speed connection to the Internet the time required for downloading may not be too forbidding (the download--if you get just the two CD-ROM images required to install the operating system with no frills--is about 1.3 GB). But if you buy the boxed product, you get the installation CD-ROMs, the complete source code, a lot of documentation, and a slew of ancillary software. Plus, you get 30 days of online (not telephone) technical support--enough to get you through any installation hassles.

Red Hat Linux 7.2 represents a significant improvement over its predecessors. The ext3 file system improves system reliability, and a lot of minor refinements increase the product's quality of "fit and finish." It's a worthwhile upgrade, and a better way than ever to get into Linux for the first time. --David Wall

Previous versions of Red Hat left much to be desired, but with each successive release this distribution has gotten better. In my opinion, Red Hat 7.3 is now the best distribution available yet - easy to configure, robust, and full featured.

I installed RH 7.3 on my finicky Inspiron 3800 Laptop. Every other time I have installed Linux (or any other operating system) I had to download drivers for the sound card, for the video card, or other peripherals. Not with Red Hat Linux 7.3. It detected and configured my sound card without any intervention. My PCMCIA ethernet card was also automatically configured.

KDE 3.0 is included, and is robust. A slew of new applications are included, allowing you to FAX, scan, edit, run spreadsheets, produce presentations, and just about anything else you could think of - right "out of the box." I also was pleased to see that KDE displays fonts MUCH better than in previous releases.

The only thing lacking in this version (personal version, but included in the Professional version) is Star Office or Open Office (which will allow you to read and write Word document files).

Highly recommended.

What we have here is a big ol' collection of toys for any Linux guru: some of the toys are more fun to play with than others, and you probably have some of them already. Most of them you can find free of charge on the Internet, somewhere. Still, the Macmillan Linux Utilities makes sense if you want to quickly acquire a bunch of utilities and evaluate them on your own, rather than spend time reading Linux publications and downloading programs one at a time, based on their recommendations.

Some of the most useful utilities in this collection include php, which interprets the PHP server-side scripting language for Web publishers; pilot-link, which allows you to hot-sync your Palm device with your Linux machine; gRun, which works much like the Windows Run dialog box; and the FileRunner file management utility with FTP capability. Developers will appreciate Alien, a program that allows you to convert Red Hat packages into Debian, Slackware, and Stampede packages (and vice versa); and GNU Octave, a high-level language for doing linear and nonlinear algebra problems. And after you've finished making your system more efficient with all the utilities, you can listen to MP3 tunes with X11amp or kJukeBox.

It has basic programs included--like Office Writer (which easily interprets Word for Windows files)--Linux web browsers, firewalls, calculators, email clients and so on. But for the fancy stuff, users need a more comprehensive system such as Mandriva 2007, or the Mandriva 2007 Power Pack. The Spring 2007 version of Mandriva 2007 includes KDE 4.0.

After trying Mandriva One on a new machine several months ago, I can only say, I don't recommend it. It's too basic, and not worth it, now that Mandriva has worked out some of the bugs from its newest 2007 generation.

Panda Internet Security 2007

I upgraded to Panda Internet Security 2007, Platinum Edition (I'll just refer to it as "Panda" hereafter), from Trend Micro's PC-Cillin suite after a recurring issue forced me to make a decision. I had had good experiences with Trend and was loathe to change, so changing was not something I really wanted to do. After checking my options and doing some research, I decided to give Panda a chance.

Panda's installation was a bit sluggish but it was not unreasonably slow. It did all of the prerequisite checks before configuration and finally it determined that it was ready to install itself. The installation at this point was smooth and straightforward and when it was done it (understandably) asked me to reboot the system.

Once the system rebooted, I was off to the races. Panda immediately started to look at programs that were trying to access the network, it flagged me down when I had incoming port scan attacks, and it dutifully logged everything going on. It also did something else - it started giving pop-up bulletins. Within 30 minutes I must have received 3 or 4 pop-up bulletins that contained informational messages, not alerts that demanded attention. While these can be configured to not show up, I was just a little annoyed by the frequency under the default settings. These bulletins have decreased since that time.

Panda's first order of business was to eliminate everything it considered to be spyware. This equated to deleting a lot of cookies. Most of these were benevolent, but some were obviously tracking cookies. Panda also seems to be eliminating these types of things when they first reach the system, which in my opinion is a good policy.

The firewall does what you would expect a firewall to to - it keeps unwanted traffic out and it prevents programs from reaching the net without your knowledge or approval. A program can be "locked down" and denied all access, and through the firewall profile you can make changes and tweaks to access.

I did some testing with the antivirus, and it worked relatively quickly to scan the entire system. I was able to tell it to work in the background with reduced CPU requirements and as a result the system did not slow down enough to make it unusable. As of yet it has not found a virus on the system so I just don't know how it will react to one when/if it finds one. My assumption is that I will get another pop-up bulletin.

The integrated antispam has yet to prove itself. I use a different antispam product, but Panda still does an evaluation on every inbound message. So far it seems to be properly marking messages as spam or not spam by the footer it places at the bottom of every message, but the other product I use has done the bulk of the work already. I am waiting to see how Panda handles spam messages that slip through the gauntlet and into my inbox. What I have seen thus far suggests that it will probably manage well enough. The antispam does integrate with Outlook automatically and gives a couple of new buttons for classifying spam when it comes.

By default, the parental control feature is turned off, and I decided to turn it on. This is one of the features of Panda I don't especially like. It manages access through the parental controls by way of profiles with passwords. So, when you have an internet connection and you have parental controls turned on, Panda requires a password just to get out the net at all. Granted, this is only required one time for the connection, but it is cumbersome and annoying. This type of set-up is not well-suited for family computing but is better for office and academic environments. After testing it for a little while and determining that it seems to work fairly well, I turned it off to avoid getting chastised by my family. I would likely use this more if there was a way to tell it to filter the same way for everyone without requiring a password.

Panda queries for updates daily. This is reassuring to me, knowing that I am almost always very current and have the latest signature files. I regard this as mostly psychological though, as I doubt I will ever encounter a virus that is new enough to require this tight of an upgrade schedule. The heuristic scan feature of the antivirus is likely to handle anything like that anyway.

One of the more interesting features of Panda is the TruPrevent functionality. Basically, this is a behavioral analysis of applications and processes on the system, which looks for unusual or suspicious activity. So far this has turned up nothing on my system, but it is reassuing to know it's running in the background. This kind of analysis should be used cautiously, though, as there is always a potential for false positives.

Visually, Panda is a very simple and straightforward application with a no-nonsense interface. You are not going to be overwhelmed with buttons and sliders and lists and everything else all jumbled on the screen in one big box, but rather everything is kept as simple as possible. Sometimes this means having to dig a little to find the setting you need, but honestly I think the interface is reasonably self-explanatory.

The most difficulty I had with Panda was in registering the product. I got a pop-up bulletin that offered a discount if I registered then, and I had already made my mind up to do so, so I followed the offer link. I was taken to a page all in Spanish (this is not entirely unexpected as I believe that Panda is based in Spain). I manageed to reach the English equivalent page, entered the requisite information and the website returned a very short error message. I got through several hours later and got through the registration process, only to find that I was sold the wrong product from the link. To resolve the issue I had to call their office and work it out on the phone.

With only a couple of minor annoyances and one registration issue, I have had a very positive experience with Panda. The application is not overly burdensome to my computer, it seems to be very quick and efficient, and it has kept me informed of issues as they arise. I consider this a good solution and I am happy to recommend it.
